Simple Chocolate Cocoa Frosting

A simple chocolate frosting that’s perfect for any cake or cupcake. 

Of course, you can serve my cocoa cake or cupcakes with just powdered sugar, and it is FANTASTIC, but I am recommending taking it one step better! My chocolate cocoa frosting is a match made in heaven for any cake or cupcake!

If you’re hoping to make a cake that needs a chocolate frosting, this is the perfect chocolate frosting recipe for you.

Now, as you get to know me, you’ll know I like to add a twist to many of the recipes I have to make them pop. . . This one is no different!

A couple of years ago, I made the cocoa cupcakes with this chocolate cocoa frosting and took them into work with me. I asked my colleagues to guess the secret ingredient in the frosting. No one could guess the extra punch they tasted in the frosting! I actually stumped them!

As you look at the recipe, you’ll see the secret ingredient to this simple chocolate frosting is pomegranate liquor. And if you don’t have pomegranate liquor, substitute raspberry liquor. You could even do an orange liquor. . . so as long as it pairs with chocolate, you’re in business!

When I make this frosting at home, my husband and sons target it like wolves. I have to protect the bowl from the chocolate frosting or I won’t have enough to frost my cake or cupcakes! They will hover over me until I’m done, praying that there is some left in the bowl to lick clean. I kid you not.

So, when something comes together like a match made in heaven, you know it’s right! Like salt and pepper, milk and cookies, and meatballs and spaghetti. . .

Simple Chocolate Cocoa Frosting

This Chocolate Cocoa Frosting will turn any cake or cupcakes into a masterpiece for your mouth! Cream and fluffy at the same time! And with an added twist of flavor, it makes it one of a kind! Using Hershey's Powdered, you can't go wrong.

Equipment

  • Hand or Stand Mixer

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened (1 stick)
  • 2/3 cup powdered cocoa (I use Hershey's)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar (Confectioner's sugar)
  • 1/3 cup half'n'half (whole milk works too)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp Raspberry or Pomegranate Liquor (feel free to substitute orange liquor)

Instructions

  • On low speed of the mixer, mix together softened butter and cocoa.
  • Add vanilla extract.
  • Alternately add powdered sugar with the half'n'half (or milk), beating until blended and no lumps remain.
  • Add the Raspberry or Pomegranate Liquor, mixing until blended.
  • Test for spreading consistency and add more half'n'half or powdered sugar as needed.
